Biology at Queen Mary University of London: Studying Life from Molecules to Ecosystems

Hear from current students about what inspired them to choose Biology at Queen Mary and what they’ve enjoyed most during their time on the programme so far.

Biology is the study of life in all its forms, from the inner workings of cells to the complexity of ecosystems. At Queen Mary University of London, the BSc Biology programme offers a flexible and research-led route into this fascinating and ever-evolving subject, with opportunities to specialise in areas ranging from molecular genetics to ecology and conservation.

A Versatile Approach to the Life Sciences

Queen Mary’s Biology programme is designed for students who want to explore the full breadth of the life sciences before choosing a specialism. The curriculum spans topics including genetics, physiology, microbiology, plant sciences, and animal behaviour, with optional modules that allow students to tailor their learning to their interests and career ambitions.

I’ve always been fascinated by how living organisms function, from the molecular level to entire ecosystems,” says Amina. “One of the many things I enjoy most about my programme is the hands-on lab experience, where I can apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting. This makes learning much more engaging and has deepened my understanding of key biological processes. I also love how flexible the course is, which allows me to explore different areas of biology and tailor my studies to my interests.

For Aynelina, the variety was also a major draw: “Biology stood out to me because it covers such a broad range of topics, from molecular genetics to the diversity of plants. I love that I get to explore so many different aspects of science within the same programme, making it both dynamic and engaging.”

Research-Led Teaching in a Supportive Environment

The School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences is home to world-class research, with 91% of its biological sciences research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. This research underpins teaching, ensuring that students learn from academics working at the forefront of the field.

The academic staff at Queen Mary have been very welcoming and kind to all first-year students, including myself,” says Najma. “When I ask a question, I am met with an answer that enhances my knowledge and makes me want to learn outside of my curriculum. The workshops are formed so that we work in smaller groups than usual lectures, with heavy discussion. I really appreciate this as it means that I am being put in a position to think outside of the box and contribute to discussions along with my peers.

Amina was also inspired by Queen Mary’s research excellence: “One of the main reasons I chose Queen Mary was its reputation for research excellence, 91% of the research in biological sciences here is world-leading or internationally excellent. That was really inspiring to me because I wanted to be in an environment where cutting-edge discoveries are being made.

Hands-On Learning Inside and Outside the Classroom

From laboratory practicals to field trips, Queen Mary’s Biology students gain valuable real-world skills that prepare them for careers in research, healthcare, conservation, biotechnology, and beyond. The programme’s strong emphasis on applying theory to practice helps students build confidence and competence in scientific techniques.

I knew I wanted to explore biology further because it’s such a vast and ever-evolving field,” says Amina. “The hands-on lab experience has been one of the most rewarding parts of my course, it’s where everything clicks.

A Campus Community in the Heart of London

Students benefit from Queen Mary’s unique setting: a large, self-contained campus in the heart of East London. This provides a close-knit community atmosphere while giving easy access to one of the most vibrant and diverse cities in the world.

I’m currently pursuing a BSc in Biology at Queen Mary for its membership in the prestigious Russell Group and strong academic reputation,” says Saakshi. “QMUL’s unique appeal lies in its serene campus, providing an exclusive academic environment within the dynamic city of London. This setting offers the perfect blend of focused learning and access to the city’s diverse cultural experiences.”

For Aynelina, the sense of belonging was just as important: “One of the biggest factors was the enclosed campus and the welcoming environment. It feels like a close-knit community, which made it easier to settle in and feel at home.”

Najma agrees: “Queen Mary is known to be very diverse and accommodating. Since I joined the university, it has felt like being a part of a wider community, which I knew I would enjoy.
