Exploring Drug Discovery at Queen Mary of London: Studying Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics

We spoke to current students about what led them to choose Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics at Queen Mary and what they’ve enjoyed most during their time so far.

Published:

Pharmacology sits at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and medicine, exploring how drugs interact with the body and how new therapies are developed. At Queen Mary University of London, the BSc Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics programme offers a practical, research-informed route into this exciting field.

A Course That Covers Every Angle of Drug Development

For students interested in understanding how medicines work, and how new treatments are brought to market, Queen Mary’s Pharmacology and Innovative Therapeutics programme offers a wide-ranging curriculum. Modules span topics from human anatomy and neuropharmacology to the business of pharmacology, giving students insight into both the science and application of drug discovery.

What drew me to the course was the variety, it opens so many pathways in drug development. I recently got to run my own PCR test, just like those used for COVID. It’s amazing to connect lectures to real-world lab work.” – Caitlin

Strong Focus on Hands-On Laboratory Learning

One of the highlights for many students has been the opportunity to develop practical skills through regular lab sessions. This hands-on learning approach reinforces the scientific principles taught in lectures and prepares students for future research or industry roles.

The labs have been the highlight of my course. Each student has their own station with proper equipment and guidance. Staff are always present and helpful, it makes the experience genuinely enjoyable.” – Shaumiyah

Research-Led Teaching and Academic Support

Queen Mary’s teaching is shaped by the world-class research taking place in the William Harvey Research Institute, one of the UK's leading centres for pharmacological research. For many students, this was a key reason to apply—and they’ve found that support extends beyond lectures.

I originally applied for the foundation course, and what I’ve discovered since being here is how exceptional the research facilities and lecturers are. We’re each assigned an academic advisor, which has really helped with the transition to university life.” – Caitlin

“Pharmacology felt like the perfect fit for me, it’s that balance of biology and chemistry, with real-world impact. There’s a skills gap in areas like pharmacodynamics, and I knew I could make a difference in this field.” – Nanthana

A Diverse and Active Student Community

Queen Mary’s diverse student body and vibrant society life were also major factors for students choosing to study here. From cultural groups to career-focused societies, the university offers lots of opportunities to connect with others who share your interests.

Queen Mary is incredibly diverse, you feel like you belong here. There are societies for all kinds of interests, and they host events that make it easy to meet new people. It really helped me find my community.” – Shaumiyah

Students also benefit from extracurricular learning experiences, such as field trips and industry visits. Queen Mary’s location in London means it’s well connected to pharmaceutical hubs, and its active student societies often build in opportunities to engage with the sector.

Thanks to the William Harvey Research Institute Society, I got to visit AstraZeneca, it was such a valuable experience as part of the first cohort to do this.” – Shaumiyah
