Attending the CETL-MSOR Conference at the University of Liverpool was a genuinely uplifting experience. It was the first time I shared my work on contextualised mathematics support for biosciences students with a wider audience, and the response was very positive. Even though my session ran in parallel with others, around fifteen people attended and were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions—particularly about how I measure impact through diagnostic testing and attendance data, and whether I plan to extend this support to second- and third-year students. Their interest and encouragement gave me a real sense of confidence in the direction of my work.

I found the conference discussions around active teaching especially inspiring—particularly how small, meaningful changes in the classroom can build stronger connections with students and boost confidence. It was rewarding to realise that many of these approaches echo what I’ve already been implementing in SEF040 and the maths support workshops. I also had some great networking opportunities, connecting with Graham Weston from QMUL’s Library Maths Support, the Director of Teaching from Swansea University, and Alun Owen from Coventry. Alun mentioned that MSOR Connections will soon have a special issue and encouraged me to submit a case study based on my work. Overall, the experience left me feeling encouraged, motivated, and more confident about developing my scholarship in mathematics education and support.

Anum attended the CETL-MSOR conference after receiving funding from the School of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (SBBS) Scholarship Fund.
