I am Onaduja, a postgraduate student from Nigeria studying MSc Business Analytics here at Queen Mary University of London. I completed my undergraduate studies in Marketing at a university in Nigeria, where I developed a strong foundation in business. However, I realised that aside from the fact that the use of technology is on the rise, my interest in data-driven decision-making and technology in advancing businesses led me to further my education in business analytics.

Choosing the right place to embark on a new learning journey can be a daunting task especially when switching courses. It requires hours of research, deep reflection, moments of confusion, and a mix of fear and excitement but in the end, when the choice is made, there is a feeling of relief. I had precisely the exact feelings while I was choosing a place for my master's programme and the course to take.

Here's why I chose to study at the School of Business and Management at Queen Mary:

1. Education and reputation

The School is well known for its esteemed faculty, demanding academic standards, and its dedication to promoting innovation in the field of business. The institution has established a great reputation for academic achievement by expanding the frontiers of business analytics research and application.

In Nigeria, practical learning is scarce and lectures are mostly theoretical, often lacking the hands-on experience required for real-world application but at Queen Mary, the curriculum is made to give access to the most recent advancements, cutting-edge research, and contemporary methodologies. Not to mention, students benefit from free access to linkedln learning and the uni’s research database which enhances learning experience.

2. Location

I chose London because it is undeniably one of the world’s most dynamic and influential cities, particularly when it comes to business and technology. Its status as a global business hub offers unrivalled access to a wide range of internships, networking events, and career opportunities. With its mix of established leaders and innovative startups, particularly in sectors like finance, technology, and consulting, being based here provides a wealth of resources and connections. While Nigeria has great potential, the curriculum there often lacks focus on the latest developments in analytics and machine learning.

After reviewing Queen Mary's course outline, I realised that studying here would not only give me access to top-tier analytical tools but also immerse me in a thriving professional world, equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s competitive job market.

3. Employability

One of the most important features of the School is its strong focus on employability, which is something that resonates with me. The university's dedicated Career and Enterprise team provides invaluable resources, including personalised career guidance, CV workshops, and interview prep which play a vital role in helping students prepare for the job market. The program offers opportunities for projects, internships, and industry collaborations, equipping graduates with essential skills.

As a student ambassador for the School, I’ve had the chance to enhance my leadership and communication skills while representing the university to prospective students.

4. Industry connections and skilled faculty

The faculty at the School of Business and Management comprises of distinguished researchers and professionals who bring real-world experience into the classroom. Their knowledge expands our understanding as students and closes the gap between theory and practice by offering priceless insights that are useful in the dynamic business world. Additionally, learning experience is enhanced by the school's solid relationships with prominent figures in the industry.

These relationships provide access to guest lectures, led workshops, and numerous networking events with job opportunities. Reflecting on my own experience, I remember struggling to grasp a concept during class, so I raised my hand for clarification. To my surprise, the lecturer approached me, took the time to pull up a chair, and patiently explained how to navigate the software. I was genuinely amazed by how attentive and helpful the lecturers are here.

5. Personal growth and experience

Studying at Queen Mary offers a holistic and life-changing experience, blending academic excellence with cultural and personal growth. Living in London, a vibrant city where modernity, art, and history converge, provides endless opportunities for exploration and learning. From world-class museumsto hidden gems in diverse neighbourhoods, London itself becomes an extension of the classroom. Queen Mary's ideal mix of rigorous academic study and cultural exposure sharpens and enlightens the mind. I'm thankful to be a part of this life-changing experience, growing both personally and intellectually in one of the most vibrant cities.

Enrolling in Queen Mary's Business Analytics programme was an exciting decision, driven by the belief that the university offers the perfect blend of academic excellence, international exposure, and opportunities for professional and personal growth.
