6 Things Studying BSc Marketing and Management at Queen Mary University of London has taught me

We caught up with Endrit, a BSc Marketing and Management student about what studying at Queen Mary University of London has taught him so far.

These last two and a half years at Queen Mary have been truely transformational for me. It feels impossible to try and sum up everything that I have learnt in 6 points, But… there are some key things that have learnt during my time here:

1. Marketing is dynamic

From my very first marketing module, where I explored the history of marketing, I was taught that this field is constantly evolving and changing. It’s part of the reason I grew to like marketing so much. Every module since has reminded us how fast marketing can change, through various case studies in my seminars and some modules incorporating new practices like social media marketing. It has also taught me to make sure that I always keep up to date with the latest developments in the field which will be useful
in my future career.

2. Organisation, organisation, organisation

My course has been very assignment heavy, so much so, that last year I did not take a single exam - just coursework and essays. This has challenged me with balancing 4 essays, long reading lists, weekly lectures and seminars, group assignments, and many more. How did you do it?? I hear you ask. Let me tell you, I barely made it out of my first semester alive because of my lack of organisation. And if you are not organised, every semester can become a stress-inducing nightmare. But overtime, as I worked on my organisational skills, I got much better at handling the workload.

Some key tricks I used to get better at being organised included:

  • To do lists (with deadlines, don’t just set yourself tasksthat never get done)
  • Scheduling
  • Using Notion to organise my modules
  • Starting my assignments early

3. Teamwork makes the dreamwork

Lets be honest, uni can be hard sometimes. Some concepts and theories you learn may go completely over your head, and sometimes you feel that your assignments just are not good enough. You are not alone though!! You have got a course full of people struggling with the exact same things. Everyone has their strong suits and I guarentee you there is someone in your course that can help you with whatever you are struggling with. Personally, I was extremely lucky to have a course full of amazing people who were there to support each other. You don’t have to do this alone, your coursemates are here to support you.

4. Get involved

Throughout my modules, almost all of my professors have presented me with extracurricular activities that could enhance my skills and knowledge. Whilst I was more hesitant to take part in these opportunities in my first year, now you will see me grabbing every opportunity I can. Even as I write this, my current lecturer has informed me of a company who is looking for marketing interns. At Queen Mary, you are not just here to attend lectures and seminars. You have enrolled for so much more, so why not take advantage of it!!

5. Learning doesn’t just happen in the Classroom

My eagerness to get involved allowed me to take part in some incredible educational experiences
during my time at Queen Mary. From internships with the School of Business Management, to committee roles in university societies, to work experience opportunities I gained through events hosted on campus, I have managed to develop vital skills in marketing including:

  • Social media marketing
  • Email marketing
  • And public relations

All of these opportunities have primed me for applying to graduate jobs in marketing.

6. Become a LinkedIn warrior

Many of my lecturers have stressed the importance of being on LinkedIn. It is the main reason why I decided to start posting frequently on LinkedIn and becoming what many people like to call: a LinkedIn warrior. It may seem awkward and intimidating to start posting on LinkedIn at first, but it can have so many benefits for every business student:

  • It can improve your social media marketing
  • It can develop your copywriting skills
  • You can experiment on your account with zero risk
  • You can a compelling profile for potential employers
  • It can help you find jobs, internships, and other opportuntiies

As my course leader puts it, “every marketing student should become a LinkedIn influencer” and I absolutely agree!
