Day in the Life of a Student Studying BSc Accountancy, PwC Flying Start at Queen Mary University of London

My mornings start with a few snoozed alarms, upbeat pop music and normally, a scroll through notifications from my course group chat - I knew no one from my college going to QMUL but my course director, Ishani, truly cultivated an environment for making fast and meaningful friendships. I live in accommodation on the Mile End campus so I’m greeted with a lovely view overlooking the canal; living in halls allows me the benefit of a slow morning where I can take my time eating breakfast.

Today was particularly special with a scheduled visit to the PwC More London office; we arrived bright and early at 9am for our final Professional Skills session, focused on refining presentation and communication!  Additionally, we received useful and honest insights through a Q&A with current QMUL Flying Start students on placement - hearing relevant tips for when we start working at the office in second year. Queen Mary has given many opportunities to network with people in the final years of their degree, whether that be through an event like this or PASS (Peer Assisted Study Support), to share their experiences and advice.

Once I return to my accommodation, I check my Google Keep to remind myself of what tasks need to be done. I’ve found that without a defined structure, it’s easy to feel restless and overwhelmed, so making a daily to-do list helps me stay on track. My list normally consists of reading this week’s textbook chapter, reviewing the lecture slides and preparing for any upcoming seminar. Since the start of Semester B, I have started four new modules and tomorrow I have classes for Introduction to Management Accounting and Quantitative Methods. Depending on how I’m feeling and the next day’s schedule, I complete my work in my room or in the library.

As the day winds down, I’ll scroll through my Twitter timeline, read a book or FaceTime my family and friends from home. This semester, I auditioned for the Inter-Uni Showcase as part of the K-Pop society, so I’ve also been practicing my part in the dance cover. Making time for activities you enjoy and time for yourself is vital for me; I am a huge advocate for a calm, reflective, canalside walk after a long day. My days aren’t always perfectly structured, some days running much later than others, but I’ve found lots of joy in my routine. I can say that my course and QMUL have provided me with a fun and fulfilling experience.
