Meet our scholars
Meet our 2024/25 Chevening Scholars
Each year, Queen Mary welcomes a vibrant community of Chevening Scholars from around the world, driven by ambition, purpose, and a commitment to positive change. Meet three of our 42 outstanding Chevening Scholars for the 2024/25 academic year:
- Lara Masad (Jordan) – MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (Conversion Programme), Faculty of Science and Engineering
- Lalola Kaban (Indonesia) – LLM FT Criminal Justice, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science
- Gonzalo Pagliaro (Paraguay) – MSc Critical Care, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
Why did you apply for a Chevening Scholarship?
Lara: I wanted to further my education in one of the world’s leading countries for academic excellence – the UK. My goal was to make a career pivot from data analytics into data science, with a focus on more advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
Lalola: First of all, the Chevening Scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarships I’ve ever come across, and being awarded it has truly been an honour. I’ve always dreamed of pursuing my postgraduate studies in the UK – ever since I was an undergraduate. So, to be selected as a Chevening Scholar this year has genuinely been a dream come true.
Gonzalo: I wanted to gain a world-class education in Intensive Care – a vital and rapidly developing field in medicine, especially in my home country, Uruguay. Chevening has been the bridge connecting my dreams with my purpose: to contribute to the improvement of Uruguay’s healthcare system.
How has your Chevening journey been in Queen Mary so far?
Lara: It has been incredibly rewarding. I've had the chance to explore a range of exciting opportunities, and one that truly stands out is the mentorship programme with JP Morgan – one of the world’s leading banking institutions. I’ve been fortunate to be mentored by one of their directors, who leads a division focused on applied artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions. It’s been an inspiring experience and has given me valuable insight into how these technologies are used in the real world.
What’s it like to be a Chevening Scholar in London?
Gonzalo: London is one of the world’s most vibrant cities, it’s full of life – you can never get bored here. As Samuel Johnson once said, "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life." Every day offers something to explore, and the learning extends far beyond the classroom.
What’s something you wish you knew before starting your application?
Lalola: I wish I’d known I didn’t have to go through the Chevening journey alone. Having someone to review your essays or practise interviews with makes a real difference.
It took me four or five attempts before being accepted in 2024, and I’ve realised how important community is. Potential leaders and scholars don’t thrive in isolation; they grow through encouragement, collaboration, and shared experience. I believe many of us who’ve made it here have done so because we had people around us who believed in us and helped us along the way.
How is your course helping you achieve your career ambitions?
Lara: With over ten years in the pharmaceutical industry, I discovered a passion for teaching and mentoring. As my interest in data and AI grew, I wanted to build on that and give back to my community.
I started by learning independently and leading training sessions, but soon realised I needed formal education to take it further. That’s why I chose the conversion programme at Queen Mary – it’s helped me deepen my skills and return home with both practical experience and a recognised qualification.
Have you got in touch with the other 40+ Chevening Scholars on award in Queen Mary?
Lalola: Yes, and it’s been great – I think having a shared identity as Chevening Scholars really helps us connect more easily. I remember once, I didn’t even realise that one of my classmates was also a Chevening Scholar until I saw her carrying a Chevening tote bag. That small moment sparked a conversation, and from there, we started spending more time together. It’s little things like that which show how being part of the Chevening community brings people together – there’s a real sense of connection and belonging.
