Drama at Queen Mary is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading centres for study of theatre and performance.
Graduate students at Queen Mary are an important part of academic life in the Department. We aim to provide our students with world-class tuition and facilities, creating a stimulating intellectual environment in which to work.

Our top-rated, internationally-recognised research attracts postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers from all over the world. We have a large thriving graduate community with a significant number of PhD projects supported by AHRC and Queen Mary awards.
Our Masters and PhD programmes attract a large number of students who benefit from studying at a friendly urban campus university, with access to the unparalleled research facilities available in London.
Cutting-edge research on a wide range of topics
The Drama Department has a long history of excellence in research. We are able to provide supervision in a wide range of topics within, and beyond, our four main strands of research, on cultural histories of performance, transnational performance, live art, and applied performance. Research culture
Drama boasts one of the most active and successful research cultures in the country. It is the home of major research projects and collaborations. Staff members have organised important conferences at Queen Mary and beyond, and have participated in workshops, festivals, and other events. Our staff are also active publishers and performers.
As graduate students in the department, you will be invited to attend the student-run Quorum. Quorum is a series of research seminars on theatre, performance, and practice. Participants in the seminar listen, watch, and respond to a research paper or performance by a visiting speaker or a member of the Department. Recent guest speakers have included Frank Bock, Asad Raza, Graham Saunders, and Kira O’Reilly.
As well as providing the chance to discuss research going on both inside and outside the Department, the seminar is a regular opportunity for the academic community to get together and socialise.
Facilities
Lock-Keeper's Cottage
In recent years the College has opened a new Graduate Centre, housed in an historic building alongside the Regent's Canal. Adjacent to the Arts Building, the Graduate Centre includes comfortable study areas, networked computer facilities, a seminar room, and a common room. The open spaces around these buildings have been landscaped to create an Arts Square. Taken together, these developments form the core of Queen Mary’s ‘Arts Quarter’, and provide some of the most inviting facilities in London for graduate study.
In addition, Drama students have access to a range of performance spaces. These include the Pinter Studio, Rehearsal Rooms 1, 2, and 3, the Film Studio, and the dedicated postgraduate Film and Drama Studio in ArtsTwo.
