My PhD examines contemporary Chinese women’s cinema, with a particular focus on commercial films released since 2010. Against the backdrop of rapid social transformation in China, the film industry has undergone significant shifts; my project traces how women’s cinema is changing within and responding to this evolving landscape. Key films include The Last Woman Standing (《剩者为王》, Dir. Luo Luo, 2015), Her Story (《好东西》, Dir. Shao Yihui, 2024), and YOLO (《热辣滚烫》, Dir. Jia Ling, 2024). The transnational feminist framework underpins this project that investigates the agency of women directors through analyses of cinematography, narrative structure, and discourse. Drawing on these textual elements, the study shows how women working in commercial filmmaking to intervene in， and actively shape，mainstream cultural conversations.
