Francesca Balchin

Published:
The Centre for Film and Ethics and Living British Cinema are delighted to welcome back alumna Francesca Balchin (MA Film 2012) to discuss the ways in which she uses her film analysis skills in her work in the Cold Case Homicide unit of the Metropolitan Police. This event will be on Thursday 3rd April from 5 to 6pm in the BLOC Cinema, Arts One. All are welcome.

Francesca is regularly called upon to analyse videos from police body cameras, and mobile phones, in criminal cases. She has also recently played a significant role in the high-profile prosecution of the so-called ‘Eunuch Maker’, using film analysis of production technology, intended audiences, and close analysis of form to trace back personnel and methods used in the recordings of criminal acts.

Francesca’s work is directly involved with the ethical questions prompted by the use of video footage in the criminal justice system. Questions of consent, intention, privacy and reliability, are central to criminal cases and in particular to preparation of materials for court. There are also questions about the effects of explicit materials on those who have to work on them, and the difficulties arising from involvement with such potentially traumatising material.

Francesca will be in conversation with Lucy Bolton about her journey from a Master’s student in film at Queen Mary to an expert on extreme pornography and extreme body modification, in which they will explore the practical, academic, legal and ethical issues that are raised through her work.
