OSCES - yes for med students but you can learn something too!

Get Spotted: Medicine

(video and more content coming soon - page under construction)

This podcast explores the communicative skills needed for success in the OSCEs. Our student and alumni talk about the performative nature of the OSCE compared to the reality of dealing with patients, but how mastering OSCEs still helps with real-life communication.

We’ll hear how medical knowledge is key to passing exams but how, as a doctor, it’s the way you convey this knowledge to a patient that matters most. In real-life, every interaction is unique and it’s essential to read a patients’ mood and listen carefully in order to discover the best way to talk to them. Our panellists about ‘letting a conversation breathe’ - how the best communication is not always words but might be silence or offering a cup of tea. Doctors must learn to be empathic and flexible in their communication styles but also stay authentic. This balance of communication skills cannot be learnt from medical books. We’ll hear some great advice on how socialising with people from all different walks of life is the best way to develop these skills.
