School of the Arts has sustained success in securing postdoctoral funding through a range of schemes. The School has a vibrant research culture across its departments: Comparative Literature and Culture; Drama; English; Film Studies; Linguistics; Modern Languages and Cultures; and the Language Centre, which has a research culture in Applied Linguistics.
Researchers within the School also benefit from the interdisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and funding opportunities of QMUL’s Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
We would be delighted to hear from postdoctoral candidates working in relevant subject areas who are considering applying for a fellowship, including the schemes listed below, and would be happy to offer support in preparing applications. Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships
Outstanding postdoctoral scholars who have not yet held a full-time permanent academic post are encouraged to apply to the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships. Details of the scheme, including eligibility criteria, can be found here: www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early-career-fellowships.

Expressions of Interest should:
- Demonstrate that the applicant meets the Leverhulme Trust’s eligibility requirements, set out at: www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early‐career‐fellowships. Please state in a series of bullet points how the applicant meets the Trust’s eligibility
requirements. - Include an academic CV of not more than 2 pages to demonstrate the research track record of the applicant.
- Include an outline research proposal including title, non-technical abstract (250 words), statement of past and current research (250 words) and 2 page (A4) project outline. The project outline should include aims, objectives, methodology and outcome (e.g. publication plans). It should make clear the scope and importance of the proposal. The methodology should be clear and explicit, comprehensible to a non-expert.
The School will announce which candidates it will be putting forward by 4 December 2024. We will then work with our applicants to finalise submissions for the Leverhulme Trust deadline of 20 February 2025. For any enquiries about the application process, please contact sta-research@qmul.ac.uk.

European Fellowships
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) School of the Arts welcomes Expressions of Interest from top talented postdoctoral researchers who demonstrate independence and excellent track record to apply with a QMUL host PI supervisor to the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships – call 2025.
What does the Fellowship entail?
European Fellowships comprise a personalised, well-structured and feasible research and training project with optional secondment for 12- 24 month fellowship. It must show a ‘best fit’ between your and PI supervisor’s expertise, two way knowledge transfer, research outcomes and wider impacts.
It offers a highly competitive salary and research/training/networking budget based on EC set allowances.
Researcher eligibility
- Any age and nationality – your main activity (work/studies) must not have been in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 36 months prior to the EC MSCA PF call deadline of 10/09/2025 (TBC)
- Have a PhD at the date of the EC call deadline
- Have a maximum of eight years full-time research experience from the date of PhD. Years outside research and documented leave periods will not be taken into account.

How to Apply
Your EOI must be submitted to sta-research@qmul.ac.uk by 5th May 2025
Your EOI must include:
1) CV, including a full list of publications and justification of research achievements (max. two pages)
2) Two page outline of your research proposal and career goals (how your research is original and innovative and potential impact and how it will advance your career). And how you will contribute to the research profile of the school
3) A statement confirming how you meet the MSCA-2025-PF eligibility criteria
EOI Results will be announced by early June. Selected candidates will then prepare the EC proposal with matched PI supervisor using EC guidance and templates supported by QMUL IRI EU pre award who provide additional guidance materials and application technical support.
QMUL was awarded nearly 70 Horizon 2020 individual fellowships and ranked 9th in the UK and 18th in Europe for H2020 fellowships and hosts over 20 successfully evaluated Horizon Europe fellowships.
EC Funding Deadline
The EC MSCA-PF (2025) deadline date is 10 September 2025.
From 1 January 2024, the UK is an Associated Country in Horizon Europe and eligible to apply to and be awarded EC funding including the MSCA-2025-PF call.
