Queen Mary’s School of Physical and Chemical Sciences in the 2025 NSS

Queen Mary’s School of Physical and Chemical Sciences (SPCS) has achieved strong results in the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS), placing it among the top performers in the Russell Group and in London across key areas of teaching and student support.

The School has been ranked 1st in London among Russell Group universities for “Teaching on My Course”, “Learning Opportunities”, and “Academic Support”. These results reflect the School’s strong commitment to delivering an exceptional learning experience and fostering an environment where students feel both intellectually challenged and academically supported. Nationally, it also ranks within the Top 5 in the Russell Group for giving students the opportunity to explore ideas in depth and for fair marking and assessment. In addition, it places in the Top 10 for “Learning Opportunities” and “Student Voice”, highlighting the School’s dedication to engaging students in their educational journey and ensuring their feedback shapes their experience.

Subject-Level Excellence

Physics continues to shine, ranking 1st in London among Russell Group universities for “Teaching on My Course”. Nationally, it is also placed in the Top 5 in the Russell Group for “Learning Opportunities”. These rankings are supported by strong student feedback: 96.1% of Physics students agreed that teaching staff are good at explaining things, and 90.1% reported high overall satisfaction with the teaching on their course. Furthermore, “Student Voice” exceeded both the London and Russell Group benchmarks.

Chemistry has also received high praise in this year’s NSS. It is ranked 1st in the Russell Group for students who say that feedback helps them improve their work, highlighting academic support and continuous improvement. Chemistry also ranks in the Top 10 nationally for being intellectually stimulating. 94.9% of Chemistry students said they found the course intellectually engaging, and the same percentage agreed that teaching staff were easy to contact for support. The School’s commitment to listening to students is further reflected in a “Student Voice” score that surpasses both the London and Russell Group benchmarks.

Student Satisfaction at a Glance

At the school-wide level, satisfaction remains consistently high. 92.5% of students agreed that teaching staff are good at explaining things, while 91.8% felt they had opportunities to explore ideas in depth.

The NSS 2025 results confirm the School’s position as a national leader in teaching excellence and supporting student experience. They also reinforce Queen Mary University of London’s ongoing commitment to providing inclusive and research-led education of the highest quality.
