Extenuating Circumstances

Extenuating Circumstances Policy

We have implemented a new Extenuating Circumstances (EC) Policy for the 2025–26 academic year. Its purpose is to ensure that Queen Mary University of London’s approach to ECs remains equitable, transparent, and supportive of students, while upholding academic standards.

Extenuating Circumstances Assessors

The Extenuating Circumstances Assessor Guidance document offers detailed information for EC Assessors, covering procedural steps, evaluation criteria, and the responsibilities of all parties involved in the EC process.

Academic Advisors

As part of the EC policy, we have introduced the Adviser Review Process for Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) [PDF 1,148KB]. This process ensures that students making multiple self-certification requests in one academic year are offered a welfare review. Its aim is to identify any underlying concerns and to refer students to appropriate support services across the University. Importantly, this review is not intended to assess or judge the validity of the EC claim itself.
