Students with caring responsibilities
We would advise staff to encourage students with caring responsibilities to contact the Advice and Counselling Service, who offer targeted support and can act as a first point for student carers.
At Queen Mary a carer is defined as:
A carer is anyone, including children or adults, who provides unpaid help and support to another person who could not manage without their support because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction. The care they give is unpaid. Care may be provided on a daily basis or may fluctuate depending on the person’s condition or circumstances.
Those aged 16-25 with caring responsibilities, are classified as ‘young adult carers’.
For more information, please see the carers webpage on the Advice and Counselling Service website.
There is separate guidance for students with children.
