This module examines the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence mental health and mental health conditions. The module provides foundational knowledge of common mental health conditions, covering symptoms, underlying causes, and evidence-based treatments. In addition, students will be introduced to experimental methods in psychology and neuroscience to study mental health and
better understand the basis of mental health conditions. Students will learn about the basics of neuroscientific methods, from research using animal models to neuroimaging. In workshops, students will gain hands-on experience in analysing and interpreting data of various methods (animal work, EEG, functional magnetic resonance imaging). A fieldtrip exploring the history of mental health research and treatment in London is included as part of the summer school.

Course aims

This module aims to provide an overview of our current understanding of the psychological and neuroscientific basis of mental health and mental health conditions. It will develop the knowledge and demonstrate experimental methods for those with interest in mental health or those who planning to further their studies in mental health and cognitive neuroscience.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops and field trips.

  • Evaluate the symptoms, underlying mechanisms, and interventions for common mental health conditions.
  • Compare experimental approaches and interpret experimental data relevant to mental health research.

  • Critically evaluate theories and research findings.
  • Find, read, and critically discuss primary research literature in the field.
  • Appreciate the diverse applications of mental health research outside the research laboratory.

Entry requirements

Course prerequisite:

It is recommended that students taking this module have prior foundational knowledge in psychology, cognitive science or neuroscience. This can be demonstrated through the completion of an introductory-level university course or an upper-secondary school qualification such as A-level or an equivalent international qualification. Good numerical and English language skills are essential.
