This module explores the concept of sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It examines how finance contributes to sustainable development through various avenues, including building resilience, funding the technology needed for innovation, providing financial resources, the importance of digital and other infrastructures. Additionally, we will discuss the international financial framework and the roles of organizations such as G20, World Bank, and BRICs. Key areas of focus include climate change, biodiversity, energy, economic growth, and social inclusion.

Course aims

This module aims to:

 

  • Build an understanding of sustainable development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Develop knowledge of the role of finance in supporting sustainable development
  • Analyse the role of technology and law in financing sustainable development.
  • Understand the international institutional architecture of sustainable finance
  • Provide tools for students to engage with issues of finance, sustainable development, technology and law

Teaching and learning

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops and field trips. 

Academic Content:

  • Develop understanding of sustainable development and its expression in the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Develop understanding of the role of finance in supporting sustainable development
  • Develop understanding of the major international actors involved in sustainable finance 

Disciplinary Skills - able to:

  • Apply knowledge to analyse the possible future roles of the major international actors in sustainable finance
  • Study the relationship between sustainability objectives, finance and regulation
  • Study emerging issues in sustainable finance and possible legal and regulatory approaches 

Attributes:

  • Engage critically with competing approaches to sustainable finance
  • Develop global perspectives on approaches to sustainable finance
  • Learn continuously about continually changing developments in the area of sustainable finance
