Making Our Digital Learning More Accessible – Updated Resources Now Live

At TELT, while we’re not directly responsible for digital accessibility across Queen Mary, we’re passionate about supporting it – and we’re proud to champion the Brickfield Accessibility Toolkit. This handy set of tools is designed to help improve the accessibility and usability of online course content within QMplus. It offers educators reports, step-by-step wizards, and practical resources to help identify and fix accessibility issues in their courses.

Why does this matter?

Because accessible content benefits everyone – whether it’s through captions on videos or the ability to access materials in multiple formats. Most importantly, creating accessible content isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ – it’s a legal requirement for universities and plays a vital role in helping us meet our institutional strategy goals.

With that in mind, we’ve refreshed and expanded our Digital Accessibility and Learning Materials site on QMplus. It’s a great starting point for anyone looking to understand what digital accessibility is, why it’s important, and how we can all play a part.

The updated site includes:

  • A short interactive course and quiz to boost your understanding

  • A practical accessibility checklist for your content

  • Resources on specific tools like SensusAccess, which helps convert files into more accessible formats

We’ve also added a new section on neurodiversity, offering guidance on how to support students with different learning needs – along with suggestions for further learning.

Plus, you can now watch the recording of our Professional Services Lunch & Learn session from December 2024. In this video, John Seamons and Cat McLean from TELT walk through the basics of digital accessibility, explain the relevant legislation, and share useful tools and tips to help make your content more inclusive.

Coming soon…

Keep an eye out for an updated version of a recording on Copyright, delivered by the Library and currently being edited by Cat. We’ll upload it to the site shortly.

Over to you!

Feel free to explore the updated Digital Accessibility and Learning Materials site and let us know what you think – together, we can make digital learning better for everyone.
