Seánia. Made Different.

First-year medical student Seánia shares how Queen Mary's unique approach stood out – even at the application stage – and the transformative experiences that followed.

 Seánia. Made Different.

"My biggest advice is to choose a medical school that values you as a whole, not just your grades. Even before I enrolled, I was receiving emails from Disability Advisors, checking if I needed any support. That kind of care makes a real difference.

Queen Mary is one of the oldest medical school in the UK – It's incredible to think how many great minds learned here. I love the Garrod Building with its history, the oil paintings, and the stunning Whitechapel Library. But while the Faculty is rooted in tradition, it moves with the times, integrating AI, virtual reality, and creative projects into the curriculum. There are also so many opportunities to speak and work with people from different backgrounds, and that's such a powerful skill for a doctor.

I came from poverty. No one expected much from me – how could someone from a no-income household, with no family history of education, do anything worthwhile? But Queen Mary’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry takes a holistic approach. They saw beyond my grades and wanted to know the person behind the score.

The best part of my degree so far has been the placements. Sitting in GP practices, speaking to people I’d never otherwise meet, has challenged my views on what it means to live. I understand how tough life can be because I’ve experienced it. But I also know how incredible it can be.

At Queen Mary, making a difference means making your mark in a way only you can. From offering financial support like bursaries to disability and wellbeing services, they remove any barriers, so nothing stands in your way.”
