Profile

Manuela leads the iBSc Sports and Exercise Medicine programme. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). She has worked with professional and non-professional dancers as well as circus artists, investigating the effects of increased physical fitness levels on performance and injury epidemiology. Manuela is the leader for Dance Medicine at QMUL where she lectures to clinicians with a special interest in the dancing/ performing arts population.  Manuela was awarded elected to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) for the 2023-25 cycle.

Summary

Manuela provides research consultancy and support to vocational ballet schools, including the Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet School, the Brit School and she is involved in a series of screening studies that have been disseminated internationally. Other research interests include physical fitness and wellbeing of general population.

She has published research findings in many relevant scientific journals (H index 21), contributing to sports and dance medicine blogs and magazines, as well as presenting at numerous international dance and sports medicine and science conferences. Manuela was awarded the prestigious title of Fellow of IADMS (2019) in recognition to her research and educational activities.

Manuela is a PhD supervisor of a number of students and she is currently open to more supervision opportunities.

    Manuela contributes to teaching for both iBSc and PGT degrees Sports & Exercise Medicine. Her contribution to non-clinical aspects, including Applied Exercise Physiology, Research Methods and Dance Medicine &Science. Manuela was awarded the WHRI education prize in 2019 and the FMD Excellence in Scholarship in 2025.
