Profile

Dr Nikolaos Malliaropoulos is an internationally recognised expert in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM), with over three decades of clinical, academic, and leadership experience. He is currently a Senior Clinical Lecturer in SEM at QMUL and a Consultant at Bart’s Health NHS Trust. Dr Malliaropoulos has pioneered ultrasound-guided diagnostic methods and evidence-based injury rehabilitation protocols. His contributions extend to founding and contributing ECOSEP, establishing SEM networks across Europe, and spearheading educational programmes across the UK, Europe, and Asia. He has significantly influenced global SEM practice, policy development, and clinical education. He also leads international collaborations to improve SEM education and clinical practice. His work has been instrumental in shaping both undergraduate and postgraduate SEM curricula at QMUL.

Summary

Dr Malliaropoulos has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on musculoskeletal injuries, particularly hamstring and tendon pathology, and diagnostic imaging. He developed the Functional Assessment Scale for Acute Hamstring Injuries (FASH) and has contributed significantly to the understanding of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in sports injuries. His research bridges clinical innovation with education, producing practical tools used in both teaching and clinical environments. His scholarly output influences international SEM guidelines and serves as a foundation for postgraduate and undergraduate research projects at QMUL

He is open to supervise PhD students at the areas of his main expertise such as MSK Sports and Exercise Medicine (Hamstrings ,low back pain, ankle injuries , Achilles tendon)

Teaching

Dr Malliaropoulos is a module lead for 'Injuries and Medical Problems in Sport' in both iBSc and MSc SEM programmes at QMUL, Dr Malliaropoulos integrates clinical expertise with academic rigor. He has introduced innovative methods such as the Ultrasound-Imaging-Assisted Clinical Examination (UIACE) and the Online Clinic Case Scenario, both of which allow students to engage in practical, real-time clinical decision-making. He provides blended, inclusive teaching to diverse student cohorts, offering mentorship that supports both academic achievement and professional development. He has also expanded electives and clinical placement opportunities, including at UK Basketball, providing unique exposure to elite sports medicine environments.
