About
Advancing blood transfusion research
Our research focuses on developing and delivering research projects that directly address transfusion management of a broad group of patients (e.g. bleeding, haemoglobinopathy, patient blood management etc.). Our research themes include:
- Translational research
- Data Science
- Education and staff development
- Healthcare Economics
Translational research
We develop and conduct clinical studies relating to blood components that underpin the evidence for safe and appropriate use of blood across different aspects of patient blood management and evaluate alternative products to transfusion. We work closely with component development laboratory at NHSBT to develop novel blood components and take them into the early clinical phase trials. We have studied the epidemiology of major bleeding due to acquired causes (e.g. obstetrics, surgery etc.) resulting in development and delivery of several clinical trials including SWiFT and PROPEHSY-2 trial.
Data science
Using routinely collected data and data science techniques our group is exploring the outcomes of patients to evaluate current and novel blood components and products to improve patient’s care.
Education
We provide a highly conducive environment for the delivery of postgraduate training programmes and support scientists and clinicians development across three organisations.
Healthcare economics
TAG collaborates closely with the Health Economics team at the Health Economics Policy Research Unit of the Wolfson Institute of Population Health (HEPRU-WIPH) to enhance transfusion care through robust economic analysis.
We focus on evaluating the value for money of new transfusion interventions by analysing their costs, patient outcomes, and impact on healthcare systems. We apply a range of methods, including cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, and budget impact analysis, to support evidence-based decision-making.
Drawing on real-world data, we assess hospital activity, blood use, and outcomes to understand how interventions affect everyday practice. We also evaluate digital blood-management platforms—such as electronic ordering and bedside scanning—for their role in improving efficiency and safety.
Our team contributes economic expertise to clinical trials like PROPHEsy II and BETC, and conducts systematic reviews to inform national guidelines and transfusion policy.
By quantifying resource use, outcomes, and system-wide effects, we help hospitals, blood services, and policymakers make high-value, evidence-informed decisions in transfusion care.
