The Queen Mary-BUPT Joint Programme (JP)/Joint Education Institute (JEI)
The Joint Programme (JP)/Joint Education Institute (JEI) is a set of dual-award bachelor degree programmes run jointly by Queen Mary University of London and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) and was launched as the first of its kind in 2004.
The JP/JEI gained the approval of the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) and is seen as the flagship joint dual award degree programme in China.
There are currently four BSc (Eng) degree programmes on the JP/JEI:
- Electronic Information Engineering,
- Intelligent Science and Technology,
- Telecommunications Engineering with Management,
- Internet of Things Engineering.
The programmes draw on the academic expertise of both institutions, as well as the strengths of two distinct educational cultures – the mathematical and scientific rigour found in China and the emphasis placed on creative problem-solving and transferable skills in the UK. Students graduate with a unique blend of skills, valued in China and around the world.
Graduates receive two degrees (one from each university) and are taught and assessed in English. The current student population is around 2,600.
Teaching is split 50/50 between the two universities. For Queen Mary taught modules, a “flying faculty” model is utilised, allowing staff to deliver Queen Mary’s world-leading teaching in person to students in Beijing. At the same time, JP/JEI lecturers are embedded within their scholarship and research groups on the London campus, ensuring that their teaching remains cutting edge.
Upon completion of the degree, around 80% of the graduates go on to do a postgraduate degree. A near 100% employment rate has been achieved every year.
