Grenfell Tower Fire: The Avoidable Tragedy
19 July 2017
Time: 6:00 - 9:00pm
Venue: ArtsTwo, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London, E1 4NS
On 14th June 2017, the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of public housing flats in North Kensington, London caught fire killing a large number of residents. We seek to bring together experts on crime, human rights and health & safety regulations to hear their reaction to the tragedy in order to try to understand what happened, and how justice could be achieved. After the speakers (who may be subject to change), we will have about one hour for a town hall style Q&A session.
- Prof David Whyte & Dr Vickie Cooper: The Violence of Austerity
- Hazards (Hilda Palmer): We Love Red Tape
- Prof Steve Tombs: Health & Safety, Red Tape and the Neoliberal Agenda
- Matt Wrack (General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union): The De-regulation Agenda
- Prof Geraldine Van Bueren QC: The Human Right to Housing
- Radical Housing Network (TBC): The Managed Decline of Council Housing
This event is jointly hosted by the International State Crime Initiative (ISCI, www.statecrime.org) and the Human Rights Collegium at Queen Mary University of London School of Law. The organisers are Dr Thomas MacManus and Dr Daniela Nadj.
