Dr Davor Jancic advises the UK Parliament on the UK-EU reset
Dr Davor Jancic has contributed written evidence to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee as part of its ongoing inquiry on “The UK-EU Reset: Rebuilding a Strategic Partnership in Uncertain Times”.

Drawing on his research into parliament’s role after Brexit and parliamentary diplomacy, Dr Jancic highlights the importance of institutionalising regular UK-EU summits at the highest level. He argues that structured summitry would strengthen the UK’s international standing, support global agenda-setting, and encourage proactive collaboration on issues such as trade, security, climate change, artificial intelligence, and youth mobility.
He also examines the government’s decision to centralise responsibility for UK-EU relations within the Cabinet Office, signalling a whole-of-government commitment to the reset. However, he warns that this approach is not matched by a “whole-of-parliament” framework. With European scrutiny in the Commons now fragmented, Dr Jancic recommends strengthening parliamentary oversight, either through a dedicated committee or by requiring government commitments to transparency and consultation.
Finally, he underscores the role of the UK-EU Parliamentary Partnership Assembly in providing democratic legitimacy, fostering dialogue, and promoting joint responses to shared global challenges.
