Neve Gordon, Professor of International Law and Human Rights at Queen Mary University of London, believes Israel’s attack on Iran was largely driven by Netanyahu’s desire to be seen as a “successful leader”. He points to Netanyahu’s sudden rise in the polls after months of declining popularity, saying “It could well lead to his downfall too … He thinks that this war will help him with the polls, and I will not be surprised if, in the next few weeks, he calls for early elections”.

Professor Gordon goes on to argue that the continuing war on Gaza is partly to maintain support from far-right members of Netanyahu’s coalition government, calling him “an extremely dangerous leader”.
