Professor Maks Del Mar to speak at Oxford’s Enlightenment Workshop

Professor Maks Del Mar will present new work in progress as part of the Voltaire Foundation’s 2025-6 Enlightenment Workshop.

The workshop is the University of Oxford’s hub for new research in eighteenth century intellectual history and literary culture. Maks Del Mar, Professor of Legal Theory and Legal Humanities at Queen Mary University of London, will present on spectatorship in philosophy, morals, and pantomime theatre in the work of Adam Smith, especially as informed by Smith’s reading of the second-century satirist Lucian.

The research, which focuses on imagination and philosophy in eighteenth century Scotland, is part of a short book project, which is under contract in the Elements in Eighteenth Century Connections series at Cambridge University Press. Professor Del Mar has long-standing interests in Scottish thought, having recently authored Neil MacCormick: A Life in Politics, Philosophy, and Law (2025).
