SOLM359 The Law of Geographical Indications (GIs)

Module description

The module will examine the substantive and procedural law relating to the EU regulation of Geographical Indications for food, wine and craft products, including the definition and eligibility of geographical names for registration; control or inspection obligations; and enforcement. The focus of this 15 credit module will the the registration of protected designations of origin for food and wine and; protected geographical indications for food, wine and craft products. Complementing the comparative consideration of the relevant substantive law, the course will identify and appraise the underlying theoretical differences that characterize contemporary EU GIs (protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI) and traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG))and trade marks (individual, collective, certification).
