Introduction
I'm Annabel Gramatikova, dual British-Bulgarian citizen and I graduated in 2025 with an LLM in Banking and Finance Law from Queen Mary University of London.
What was your background before studying your LLM?
Before joining CCLS, I worked in corporate governance, assisting companies in aligning their practices with evolving legal standards.
Why did you choose to study at Queen Mary? What were the highlights of studying your programme?
I chose Queen Mary for its outstanding academic reputation and its strong focus on banking and finance law. Among the highlights of my studies were serving as a course assistant for Applied International Finance Law and Banking and FinTech Law, as well as undertaking research and management responsibilities under the supervision of Professor George Walker.
I also had the privilege of collaborating with a group that founded the Ideational Research Fund (IRF), dedicated to examining next-generation technologies. Particularly memorable were the classes led by Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal, where in-depth discussions with fellow students explored various legal mechanisms for addressing financial distress, sovereign debt restructuring and restoring corporate viability.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, I intend to pursue a career as a solicitor while simultaneously cultivating an academic trajectory. I am confident in my ability to balance both paths, as genuine engagement with specific legal subjects transforms work into a source of intellectual fulfillment.
What advice would you offer future students?
My advice to prospective students is to make full use of the diverse opportunities offered by Queen Mary. The university provides an exceptional academic environment, and its location in Lincoln's Inn Fields situates students at the heart of legal and financial services. You will have the opportunity to connect with highly accomplished peers from around the world, exchange perspectives, and develop lasting professional and personal networks. I would also encourage students to focus on acquiring transferable skills, as these will prove invaluable throughout their careers.
Current role and future plans:
I am currently employed at an international law firm, where I focus on multi-million bank loans and bond finance documentation, derivatives, securitisation, and mergers and acquisitions. Looking ahead, my goal is to establish my own firm that provides specialised financial advisory services.
