Pathways to Law

Ever considered a career in law? This two-year programme offers you the opportunity to explore what entering the legal profession might look like.

The Pathways to Law programme was set up by the Sutton Trust and The Legal Education Foundation in 2006 to inspire and support academically-able students from non-privileged backgrounds who are interested in a career in Law.

Applications

Applications to Pathways to Law 2025 are now closed.

Programme

Queen Mary Pathways to Law participants join the programme at the beginning of year 12 and finish in the Spring of year 13. Students attend regular, bespoke events such as:

  • Visits to the Royal Courts of Justice and Inner Temple.
  • Work experience opportunities at one of many partner organisations. Placements in 2025 included Santander, Cooley LLP and 39 Essex Chambers.
  • Taster Lectures, University experience days and Law master classes.
  • Personal Statement, CV writing, interview skills and LNAT workshops.
  • Networking, Public speaking in the work place and Mooting workshops.
  • Mentoring scheme.
I really found this programme insightful, and it has shaped me into the person I am right now as I was able to utilise the experiences I have had and the skills I have learnt.

QMUL Pathways to Law studentsEligibility

You may apply to our Pathways to Law programme if you:

  • Attend, and have always attended, a state-funded, non-fee paying school/college.
  • Are studying in Year 12 in England or Wales, Year 13 in Northern Ireland, or S5 in Scotland (or equivalent).

If you meet the above requirements, we will look at the following criteria when we consider your application:

  • Have achieved at least five GCSEs at grades 9 – 6 (or A*-B), including English and Maths.
  • Would be in the first generation of your family to attend university.
  • Have been in receipt of Free School Meals whilst at secondary school.
  • Attend a school or college with below average attainment or a low rate of progression to the top third of higher education institutions.
  • Live in a neighbourhood with a low rate of progression to higher education and/or a high level of socio-economic deprivation.
  • Have been looked after or in care.

The more criteria you meet, the more likely you are to secure a place. You don't need to meet all the criteria to be eligible.

There is room on the application form and teacher verification to explain any extenuating circumstances that might impact your application.

If you are (or have been) looked after, accommodated or in care, you only need to meet the age, school and academic requirements.
