How to access healthcare as a student

Someone having their heart rate monitored To access healthcare while at university, you need to register with a local GP. You can do this before you arrive - don't wait to register until you are sick, as this could delay you being seen.

If you are a UK student and already have a GP at home, we recommend that you register with one close to where you live during term-time, such as the Student Health Service.

If you cannot register with the Student Health Service for clinical reasons, or if it's more convenient to register with a doctor close to where you live, you can find a list of local doctors through the NHS find a GP website.

If you are an international student, your access to healthcare will depend on your type of visa and length of stay:  read up on how to access healthcare as an international student.

On campus health helpersIf you are studying for less than six months (e.g. a short course, or you are an exchange or Associate student), you can register as a temporary resident by filling in a GMS3 form and handing it in at the Student Health Service reception in person.
