We spoke to some students from the Biomedical Sciences programme about what led them to Queen Mary, and how their experiences so far have shaped their journey.

From understanding how the body works to exploring breakthroughs in public health, Biomedical Sciences is a subject that offers a foundation for a wide range of careers. At Queen Mary University of London, students study this dynamic subject in a supportive, diverse, and research-driven environment, with the flexibility to tailor their degree to their goals, whether that’s medicine, clinical research, or innovation in healthcare.

A Pathway to Medicine - and Beyond

Many students see Biomedical Sciences as a stepping stone towards clinical careers, including medicine. Queen Mary supports this ambition with progression routes into its MBBS and dentistry programmes for top-performing Biomedical Sciences students. Others are drawn to the subject for its lab-based research opportunities and public health relevance.

I chose Biomedical Sciences because I want to become a doctor, it’s my lifelong dream. The hands-on learning, especially in anatomy and physiology, makes me feel like I’m one step closer.” – Daniela

“Since discovering antibiotic resistance and vaccinations during GCSEs, I’ve been fascinated by how science protects public health. I’ve always had a keen interest in lab-based work.” – Tayyiba

In my home country, studying science meant either medicine or dentistry. But Queen Mary showed me a broader path into healthcare and research. Biomedical Sciences turned out to be the perfect fit.” – Natalija

Courses that Align with Individual Interests

The programme covers everything from physiology and pharmacology to genetics, immunology, microbiology and more. In the final year, students can tailor their learning through a wide range of specialist modules such as Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine, Cancer Biology, or Advanced Genetic Disorders, and complete either a laboratory-based research project or public engagement project.

I’ve always been interested in the immune system, and Queen Mary offers modules in clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and immunology. That was a big factor in choosing the course.” – Ahana

“I didn’t enjoy science much in school, but A-level Biology changed everything. I knew I wanted to study medicine-related biology, Biomedicine was the perfect middle ground.” – Kathryn

Queen Mary has multiple research institutes in areas like immunology and pharmacology, so I knew I’d have opportunities to explore science from different angles.” – Natalija

A Supportive and Welcoming Community

Students benefit from expert teaching, state-of-the-art labs, and personalised academic support. Queen Mary’s foundation year option also makes the programme accessible for students from a range of academic backgrounds, while initiatives like the Year in Industry scheme help students build real-world experience and confidence.

“From the moment I stepped foot on campus, I felt welcomed. Everyone, from coursemates to accommodation friends, has been helpful and kind. I’ve made some of my best friends here.” – Alex

“I started with a foundation year, which made the transition easier. The support and access to resources have exceeded my expectations.” – Daniela

Everything I learned, from teamwork on group projects to analysing scientific literature, helped me thrive in my Year in Industry at Pfizer. I even co-authored a published paper, which still feels surreal.” – Natalija

A Campus-Based Experience in a Global City

Being a campus university in London, Queen Mary offers the benefits of city life alongside a more connected university environment. For students, it’s the best of both worlds.

I knew I wanted to move to London and Queen Mary had the atmosphere I was looking for. I also liked the idea of living in East London, where you see every side of the city.” – Kathryn

“Queen Mary feels like a second home. The campus is big and close to where I live, so commuting is easy and affordable.” – Tayyiba

“It’s a safe, student-friendly campus with everything close together, and 24-hour library access, which has been really useful.” – Marissa

Diversity and Belonging

For many of our students, Queen Mary’s diverse community was an important part of their decision-making process. The university’s inclusive atmosphere helps students from a wide range of backgrounds feel at home.

I preferred Queen Mary out of all the London universities I visited. It’s diverse and welcoming, and that made a big difference.” – Kathryn

“The diversity of students and the sense of community stood out to me straight away.” – Alex
