The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has established a governance structure to support coordinated action on bullying and harassment across the FMD community.
This structure brings together a range of perspectives from across the Faculty to help prevent and address bullying and harassment. It is intended to ensure that action is informed by evidence, community insight and the realities of working and learning across FMD.
This work is supported by two complementary groups:
- Steering Group – provides Faculty-level leadership and coordination, focused on design and delivery
- Stakeholder Group – brings community-informed insight, challenge and recommendations into the process, helping to ensure that this work remains grounded in the experiences and perspectives of the FMD community.
Together, these groups are intended to support a more consistent, transparent and accountable approach across the Faculty. Agendas, minutes and updates will be shared where appropriate, while respecting confidentiality and the boundaries of formal processes.
Bullying and harassment are persistent issues across higher education, and FMD has a responsibility to address them openly and seriously within our own community. The pressures and hierarchies of academic life can make these issues difficult to challenge, but they never justify treating others poorly. A Faculty should be a place where people can be inquisitive, collaborative and able to contribute without fear of disrespect or intimidation. This work is about listening carefully, taking practical action, and building shared responsibility for making FMD a safer and more respectful place to work, learn, generate ideas and share understanding.— Stuart Miller Deputy FMD EDI Lead for Culture and Community.
