Cafe Culture is about creating a structured space where we can understand what is getting in the way of respectful behaviour, identify what needs to change, and think carefully about who can help make that change happen. Cafe Culture is a facilitated discussion approach adapted from Wellcome’s work on research culture. In FMD, it is being used as a structured way to explore complex issues through focused conversation, moving from shared reflection to clearer priorities and practical action.
This Cafe Culture series focuses on bullying and harassment within the FMD community. Rather than assuming in advance which issues matter most, the sessions are designed to help participants identify what is happening, where the key challenges sit, and what may need to change.
The purpose is to develop a clearer understanding of the issues present across FMD and the mechanisms needed to address them. The approach asks what should be addressed, why it matters, what action may be needed, and who may be able to influence or take that action forward. Feedback will be considered thematically and used to inform the wider FMD bullying and harassment programme, while respecting confidentiality and the boundaries of formal processes.
These sessions are not formal reporting meetings or case-review spaces. Participants will not be asked to disclose personal experiences, and any examples discussed should be kept non-identifying. Where someone needs individual advice or support, they will be signposted to the appropriate route.
