ITS Appraisal

The 2025 appraisal is window now open. The ITS window runs from October to the end of November

Aims

Appraisal provides you with an opportunity to reflect on the past year and:

  • Celebrate personal and team achievements
  • Plan for the coming year – identifying what new pieces of work are needed, and what could be stopped or reduced in scope
  • Consider how work is carried out and identify opportunities for improvement

To support you and your team to prepare for appraisal, there is guidance on the Appraisal pages, training or one to one support through an OPD surgery. In addition there is specific tools that might help for specific parts of appraisal.

  • Objectives – we have developed the Flourishing at Queen Mary toolkit which includes grade profiles, Our Values in action, and Leading Together (keeping in mind that leadership is for all staff, not just those who manage). These could be useful for ensuring objectives are set at the right level and setting behavioural expectations
  • Career and development – there are guides and tools for PS, technical and operational staff, the academic careers framework and information on different development providers and CPD training
  • Citizenship - Queen Mary citizenship is about contributing to the Queen Mary and the wider Higher Education community, while exemplifying Our Values in action. You will find some examples of activities here.

Shared objective for managers

If you are a manager, please ensure that the following is included as part of your objectives for the coming year  (and any managers you line manage). You should tailor the wording to meet your needs and ensure that there is a specific, realistic outcome.

Provide support for your managers to address poor performance and consider career and development needs for colleagues.

Understand the different levels of performance in your team and take action to improve performance, including:

  • Holding people accountable for delivery of objectives
  • Supporting career and development

Evidence for achievement of the above could include e.g. regularity of one to one, development activities undertaken by team.
