Late policy

If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, we will have to cancel it and you will need to arrange for another time.

What would you like to discuss?

CVs and cover letters

Upload your CV or cover letter to CareerSet, and use the feedback to improve or tailor what you’ve already prepared.. It works similarly to applicant tracking systems used by graduate employers. If you come to your appointment having already used CareerSet, your consultant can provide more personal support.

Application form questions and personal statements

Looking to receive support on application questions for a role you want to apply for? Perhaps you are looking to apply for a master’s programme and need support with the personal statement?

Prior to your appointment, ensure that you have answered application questions to the best of your ability or you have drafted your personal statement with accordance to the guidelines of the university course you are applying for. This way, your appointment can be spent reviewing what you’ve done rather than creating it from scratch.

Career planning

If you are booking an appointment for support on career planning, dedicate some time to research ahead of your appointment. Try looking into the roles you can do with your degree or which sectors your degree could be applied to. Check out our Career Ideas for some inspiration and useful links or Career Plans for actions you can take now. You can then use your appointment time to go through what to do next.

Job hunting

If you want information, advice and guidance around job hunting strategies, compose a list of all the current ones you are using or are aware of so the time in the appointment is dedicated to learning new job searching tools.

Video interview

If you have booked an appointment to receive support on pre-recorded video interviews, you can utilise our platform Shortlist.Me which has a variety of mock video interviews. This allows students and graduates to practice their answers and understand the format of these interview types.

LinkedIn

Spend some time completing the sections on your account such as work experience, education and your personal profile. You can also add different sections to your profile to include more evidence of your skills, knowledge and experience. CareerSet can review your LinkedIn profile and suggest improvements.

Assessment centres

If you have an appointment to discuss assessment centres, please review the documents you have been sent by the employer and if possible, send these over to the Careers Consultant running the appointment, or upload to the appointment on CareersHub. The consultant will be able to talk you through any concerns or answer any questions you may have, as well as prepare you in the best possible way.

Psychometric testing

Have a look at Graduates First which offers many different types of psychometric practice tests. Check out our page on Psychometric Tests for more tips on how they work and how to do well in them. This will help your consultant to point you in the right direction and make sure you’re doing the practice that will really help.

Practice interviews

Send the job advertisement and any other resources the employer has sent you to the Careers Consultant running this appointment so they can prepare interview questions in advance. Find examples of evidence that relate to the person specification on the job advertisement.

Please note to book this appointment type, you will need to have a job or admissions interview scheduled. If you need support in general interview techniques and preparation, please book a ‘Careers’ appointment.

Idea Surgery

Would you like to discuss your business idea? Before your appointment with a member of the Enterprise team, you will be asked to briefly outline your business idea, describe what you have done so far, and share what you are hoping to get out of the session. This helps ensure the time is focused and tailored to your needs with the Enterprise Advisor.

Make sure you know where the appointment is taking place. The consulting room location or Teams meeting link will be included in your confirmation and reminder emails.
