Interviews and assessments

Interviews and assessment centres are an essential part of the employer's recruitment process. Preparation, self-reflection and practice are the keys to these next steps in your career journey, and we’ve provided guidance for each of these on this page.

Our resources offer practical guidance and tips to help you feel more prepared, confident and focused. Practice interviews are strongly encouraged and can be booked through the Careers team.

Interviews

Whether you are applying for internships, placements, graduate or entry-level roles, or postgraduate study, organisations want to learn more about your experience, and understand your skills, motivations, and potential to consider your suitability for the role.

Types of interviews may include:

  • Short telephone screenings.
  • Virtual interviews.
  • One-to-one interviews.
  • Panel-based interviews.
  • Video interviews

There are also a variety of interview formats: competency, situational, strength-based, case studies, and academic. For postgraduate studies, each university programme will decide if they offer interviews.

Assessment centres

Assessment centres are designed to help employers understand how you perform in real-world tasks. They consist of a variety of activities spread over a longer time frame as part of the recruitment process, usually from half a day to two days.

They often include a combination of:

  • Individual and group exercises.
  • Presentations.
  • Psychometric tests.
  • Role play.
  • One to one interviews.

Employers are keen to see how you communicate, solve problems and work with others, all of which are designed to assess your skill set relevant to the role.
