Final year plan

Your future is our focus. We know your final year at university is a busy time, but we can help you plan your next steps to help you leave university feeling prepared and confident about your future.

Stay balanced and start your planning early

To help you keep organised during a busy final year, it is important to start planning ahead. In your second semester, you'll be balancing final assignments and writing your dissertation, as well as applying for graduate opportunities or further study.

Use the summer before final year and your first semester to plan ahead  – start thinking about the roles you're interested in, and when you would need to start applying.

Find potential job roles

If you're not sure what types of jobs you should be looking for, make sure you do some research into how you can apply your degree and skills to different roles. You can take the Prospect Job Match Quiz to find what role fits you.

Prospects Job Match Quiz

Many final year students apply for graduate schemes or graduate jobs. These applications sometimes close as early as Semester A of your final year, so make sure you're aware of these deadlines early.

Don't panic if you don't land a graduate scheme. You can get into careers and sectors from many different starting points, such as entry-level jobs or roles with small-medium businesses. Explore our page on graduate jobs.

Get your CV ready

Before you start applying to jobs, make sure your CV is the best it can be. This means up-to-date with all your latest work experience and university activity, as well as including the transferable skills you've gained.

It is also really important to tailor your CV to each individual job application. Once you've updated your CV, make sure you review and tailor it using the job description before submitting an application.

It is also valuable to speak to your lecturers and academic advisors about your ideas and get their insights into academic careers.

Attend a finalist careers appointment

We offer career coaching appointments to final year students. These appointments will allow you to discuss your thoughts and plans for life after university. They are also confidential and a safe space for you to explore your ideas, and learn about what you can do to take the next step.

Your appointment will be with an expert careers consultant who is there to help you. There will be no judgment  – whether you have it all planned out or haven't started planning yet.
