Accessible news stories
News stories on our website may not be traditional web pages, but users interact with them in the same way. It's essential to follow accessibility best practices when uploading news stories.
Format your headings
- Use clear headings and subheadings to break up your content and improve readability.
- Always format headings within T4 - do not rely on bold or underlined text to indicate headings.
Use plain English
- Write in clear, concise language that's easy to understand.
- Begin with the most important information.
- Avoid acronyms, abbreviations and jargon unless they are essential (and always explain them on first use).
Choose accessible images
- Avoid images containing text, as the small image sizes will mean it is not readable.
- If you include charts, graphs or infographics, ensure the key information is also explained in the surrounding text so it's accessible to all users.
- Provide meaningful alt text for all informative images used.
Use descriptive link text
- Ensure hyperlinked text describes the destination. Eg use "Read the full report on sustainability" rather than "Click here."
- Avoid using the same link text for different destinations, as this can be confusing for screen reader users.
