Accessible image names

Before you upload an image online, you should give it a clear and descriptive file name on your computer.

Why are image names important?

Your browser uses the file name saved on your computer when uploading an image, not the title you give the image in T4. This means it is important to name the file correctly before uploading it.

Descriptive image names provide useful context for users and search engines, helping content to be understood and discovered more effectively.

What is an accessible image name?

  • Use hyphens (-) between words, for example student-services-centre.jpg.
  • Keep file names short and easy to understand.
  • Include relevant keywords where appropriate, such as a location, event or subject.
  • Use lowercase letters and avoid special characters where possible.

Good examples

  • students-studying-library.jpg
  • graduation-ceremony-2024.jpg
  • mile-end-campus-aerial-view.jpg

Bad examples

  • IMG_1234.jpg
  • Photo1.jpg
  • Screenshot-final-final.jpg

File names generated automatically by cameras or phones provide little information and can make images difficult to find later.
