Downloading media

The below guidance explains where you can source media with the correct permissions for Queen Mary content. See our imagery guidance to learn more about the style of images we use as part of the Queen Mary brand.

Permissions

Images and copyright

Most images - photos, illustrations and graphics - are protected by copyright, even if no symbol is shown. The creator or their employer usually owns the rights.

Always ensure you have permission before using images, especially those found online. Unless sourced from the trusted platforms we list below, 'copyright-free' images may still carry risks, as permissions can change.

The consequences

Queen Mary may be asked to purchase the licence, or we can even be taken to court. If somebody in your team has used an image without permission, your team will be expected to pay the fee (this can be thousands of pounds).

Where to download media

Make sure you are downloading media from one of our official sources.

When sourcing images from Adobe or iStock, please avoid using AI-generated content. You can use the platform’s search filters to exclude AI-generated images from your results.

External suppliers

If you are using images produced by an external supplier, it is important that you have clear permission of the copyright holder to use the image. Get in touch with the Content and Brand team if you are ever unsure.
