Descriptive links
Generic link text forces users to guess where a link leads or search for context elsewhere on the page. Clear, descriptive links help users quickly understand what to expect and find the information they need.
What is link text?
Link text is the visible, clickable text within a hyperlink. It is the word or phrase a user selects to navigate to another webpage, document or section.
Vague link text such as "click here", "read more" or "learn more" does not clearly explain where a link leads or what will happen when it is selected. In Silktide, these issues are reported under "Ensure links explain their purpose".
Why does descriptive link text matter?
Users often scan web pages rather than reading every word. Descriptive links make it easier to identify relevant information quickly without needing to read surrounding content.
Descriptive links are also important for accessibility. Screen readers can present users with a list of links on a page, often without the surrounding text. If multiple links are labelled "click here" or "read more", users have no way of knowing where those links lead. Clear link text helps all users navigate your content more efficiently and confidently.
Guidelines for writing better link text
Be descriptive
Use link text that clearly explains the destination or purpose of the link.
Good: Student accommodation options
Avoid: Click here
Use action verbs when appropriate
If the link triggers an action, begin with a clear verb. Examples:
- Download the annual report
- Submit an enquiry form
- Visit the library website
Avoid filler phrases
Do not use generic phrases such as:
- Learn more
These phrases provide little or no information when read out of context.
How to improve link text
Example one:
Instead of: For more information about our services, click here.
Use: Read more about our Services.
Example two:
Instead of: We offer different types of accommodation for our students. You can read about accommodation types here.
Use: We offer different types of accommodation for our students.
