Our geography
Our location forms a strong part of our identity, and we should talk about it with confidence and accuracy.
Our campuses and locations
Queen Mary has six campuses in London and three overseas locations:
Mile End
Our largest campus. Home to our Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering, as well as several halls of residence, lecture theatres, and the Mile End Library. There are several notable facilities on this campus, such as cafés, a cinema, arts lab and post-production suite, a gym, and our canalside.
Note: while this is our largest campus, we never refer to it as our ‘main campus.’
Whitechapel
Co-located with the The Royal London Hospital and The Royal London Dental Hospital, it's home to world-class biomedical research laboratories, our beautiful medical library, a café, and teaching facilities. This campus also contains halls of residence for our medical and dental students.
Charterhouse Square
Home to several of our medical research headquarters including Barts Cancer Institute, the William Harvey Research Institute and the Wolfson Institute of Population Health. This campus also contains halls of residence for our medical students.
West Smithfield
For our medical and dental postgraduate and research students, the campus is co-located with St Bartholomew's Hospital, the oldest hospital in England. Here you will also find our cardiovascular, cancer, epidemiology, and public health research facilities, and our Clinical and Communications Skills Centre – one of the most advanced of its kind.
Lincoln’s Inn Fields
Home to the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, our postgraduate teaching and research centre for law in the heart of Legal London.
Ilford
Lynton House forms part of our medical teaching campus. It provides a dedicated space for students to develop essential clinical skills, improve communication abilities and collaborate with their peers. Facilities include Virtual Reality simulations, mock wards for practical training, seminar rooms, and tailored study spaces.
International locations
Malta
We established a medical school on the island of Gozo in 2017 with a campus in Victoria. The campus is a 25-minute ferry ride from mainland Malta. Gozo is well-known for its splendid beaches, mystifying walks, cultural events, tranquillity, and safety.
China
Queen Mary runs three joint programmes with universities in China: Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications; Nanchang University; and Northwestern Polytechnical University.
Note: There is only one correct version of ‘Queen’ in Mandarin (女王).
So for a Chinese audience, please always use: 伦敦玛丽女王大学
Paris
Queen Mary also delivers its LLM programme, taught in English by Queen Mary academics, at the University of London Institute Paris (as well as in London) - situated right in the heart of the capital.
Faculty, School and building naming conventions
Faculty and School names
When referring to our Faculties and Schools in external communications, use their full name in the first instance eg ‘Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’, and ‘School of Law’. Please note that we don’t use ampersands within names.
For following mentions, it’s fine to use ‘the Faculty’ or ‘the School’ if the context is clear.
In internal communications, we can refer simply to eg ‘Medicine and Dentistry’, but never externally.
Building names
Always remember to specify which campus a specific building is located at: eg ‘ArtsOne (Mile End)’ or ‘(Mile End campus)’.
